Knee fractures can occur from direct or indirect forces on the knee. Common injuries of the knee include patella (kneecap) fractures and tibial plateau fractures, among others.
Knee Fracture Types
Falls of any kind, auto accidents, sports injuries and direct blows to the knee may cause these fractures. Because the knee is such an important weight-bearing joint, it is important the broken bones in this area heal as anatomically as possible. For this reason surgery is often recommended for all but the most simple (non-displaced with no separations between bone fragments) fracture patterns.
Symptoms are most likely swelling, mild to severe pain around the knee and decrease range-of-motion.
